<image:caption>R&R Marketplace in Dellwood This long vacant grocery anchored shopping center has been renovated into an impressive economic and community hub. This bright, inviting space includes an entrepreneurship center with co-working space with Forge (a SCORE like model of mentors), and employment/workforce training center on the economic development side. On the consumer/community service side, the Refuge & Restoration Marketplace has a Brightside Childcare Center (modeled after Flance), Dellwood Community Pharmacy, Arch Behavioral Health (counseling and a mobil unit), Cathy’s Kitchen (2nd location), a little community flower garden and more! What grabbed the heart of our Spirit of St Louis Group getting a tour was the vision and positive philosophy of Co-Founder Beverly Jenkins. While they do provide some food services; they ask people in line – why are you in line? The answer is always employment, they don’t have a job. R&R’s goal is to get them out of line. Their messaging is “You CAN change your life! Come here and learn how!” And if you’d like to hear more from Beverly Jenkins, come join SOS on the eve of November 17th at the Delmar Divine. She’s one of our speakers for our Neighborhood Revitalization event. For more info: R&R Marketplace LinkedIn</image:caption>

<image:caption>What is a Donor Advised Fund and How Does It Work? Definition: A DAF is a philanthropic vehicle that allows donors to make a charitable contribution, receive an immediate tax benefit from the IRS and then recommend grants to qualified charities over time. How it works: A donor transfers cash or appreciated investments (stocks/bonds/mutual funds) to an IRS approved donor advised fund portfolio. IRS approved DAFs are offered by the SL Community Foundation Youthbridge Foundation, Jewish Federation, United Way, Charles Schwab, Fidelity, Vanguard. Your accountant or CPA can let the donor know how much can be moved into a DAF in a given year. Transferred assets receive an immediate tax benefit. Funds are then invested by the DAF manager to grow until you designate a charity beneficiary (make a grant) for part or all of the account value. Donor gives when it is convenient and meets her/his goals Minimum to open varies, but several are available in the $10,000 or $25,000 levels.</image:caption>

<image:caption>One of the earliest on the ground agencies out of the gate helping people affected by the Tornado was this impressive agency! They jumped to collect survival supplies and coordinate volunteers in a massive multi-day People’s Response Hub to provide for urgent needs . Action St. Louis is a grassroots racial justice organization that seeks to build political power for Black communities in the St. Louis region. They build campaigns that leverage organizing, communications, advocacy, and direct action to mitigate harm against our community while fighting for long-term transformation. Action St. Louis and Housing Justice work is a crucial response to St. Louis’s pressing affordable housing crisis.</image:caption>

<image:title>Newsletter Archive - THE GIVER’S LEDGER JUNE: Tornado Relief, Philanthropy, and Power in Action - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>How should an Individual donor think about a Disaster? What should we expect as to how long recovery will take from the May 16th Tornado? Amy Shaw, President and CEO of Nine PBS said “the May 16th Tornado was St. Louis’s Katrina. It will take a generation for some of the north side families and businesses to recover.” Orvin Kimbrough CEO of Midwest Bank says the “Real Work of Leadership is Managing Transitions. If we don’t manage the emotional, cultural, and operational shifts that come with change, we risk losing momentum, damaging trust, and stalling growth…Change isn’t a moment, it’s a season. Sometimes, it’s several seasons strung together.” For you as an individual donor – realize recovering from this Tornado is not a once-and-done donation. Consider: a) setting up an automatic monthly donation to a nonprofit (or two) that are providing long term solutions to people rebuilding their lives. Could be in the areas of shelter/housing, childcare, food, house repairs, replacing furnishings, diapers, transportation etc. or b) setting up a strategy for bi-annual or annual donations to key recovery providers.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In this new feature, I will periodically share or suggest something that will help you be a better board member. This month, the topic is your nonprofit’s Banking Relationship. Ask your Treasurer or Finance Chair: “When’s the last time we did an RFP on our bank”? An RFP is a Request for Proposal. Does your nonprofit’s bank: Offer you competitive fees for the services you get? (How do their fees and services compare to other banks serving non-profits?) Have references who are “raving fans”? Provide a banker for your board, advisory board, or a committee? Sponsor an event or buy a table at your gala? Commit to provide volunteers when you need some? Provide introductions and references/resources that help you grow or problem solve? It’s good to check up on your nonprofit’s business relationships every few years. Bank, CPA, Brokerage (if you have an endowment or investments). Make sure your expenses here are reasonable and it doesn’t hurt to ask for a relationship and help beyond the business services.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A Small Way To Address The Topic of Climate Change The Specific Issue: Recent news reported that the Trump administration dismissed 400 scientists working on the National Climate Assessment required by federal law, normally published every 4-5 years. This report is used to make big decisions ranging from storm sewer pipes to flood zone planning to air quality to wildfire risk and more. The Encouraging Solution: Two major scientific societies will fill the gap and finish the cornerstone report. The American Meteorological Society The American Geophysical Union Why It Matters: “Watering down or killing the national assessment will not keep the message about the importance of climate change from getting out”. “Storms and wildfires don’t care if it’s a red state or blue state”. “Climate change affects us all…. It doesn’t care how we vote”. Consider a donation to support this, I did!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Your Charitable Life Cycle [part one] When I was a financial planner, we helped individuals and families address their sequential financial needs and priorities at each stage of their life cycle. There are three major stages of one’s Financial Life Cycle: 1) Learning Years—Birth to-age 21; 2) Earning Years—Ages 22-64; and 3) The Yearning or Golden Years—Ages 65+. Today, we’re going to focus on the Learning Years. In the learning years, a youth’s priorities are spending money for technology, clothes, and entertainment. Their parents’ priorities are savings and investing for college tuition, supplies and boarding expenses. As a parent, there are a few key finance lessons you can teach your child: 1) How to budget, 2) How to save and grow your money, 3) How to give back. See the full article HERE.</image:caption>
