Leadership Begins Locally: Why Rise & Run Matters

When we talk about capacity building, we often think about nonprofit infrastructure — governance, revenue alignment, sustainability.

But capacity doesn’t only live inside organizations, it lives inside communities.

And communities grow stronger when informed, prepared women step into public leadership.

That’s why we’re excited about our upcoming Rise & Run: Running for School Board Lunch & Learn at Lindenwood University on March 19.

This session is practical, nonpartisan, and grounded in real experience.

We’ll hear directly from:

  • Stacy Clay, St. Louis Public Schools Board Member (two terms, including one term as Board President)

  • Jamal Bailey, Ferguson-Florissant School Board Member

  • Sarah Oekle, Francis Howell School Board Member and middle school teacher in Parkway

Each brings a different perspective — urban, suburban, educator, board president — and each understands the realities of local governance.

We’ll discuss:
• What it actually takes to run
• What they wish they knew starting out
• The time commitment and responsibilities
• How to prepare thoughtfully and strategically

Every attendee will receive worksheets and access to the Rise & Run document hub — because preparation is power.

As Capacity-Building Catalysts, we believe systems change requires more than passion. It requires informed leadership.

School boards shape:
• Educational equity
• Budget priorities
• Policy decisions
• Community direction

When women step into these roles with strategy, clarity, and confidence, entire communities benefit.

Advocacy matters.
Philanthropy matters.
But governance is foundational.

Rise & Run exists to help women move from “I’ve thought about it” to “I’m ready.”

Leadership doesn’t wait for permission.
It prepares. It organizes. It runs.

If you’ve ever considered serving — or know someone who should — we invite you to join us.

Because capacity building doesn’t only happen inside nonprofits; it happens in school board rooms.
